Leroy Justice: Southern Sound and Local Heart

Critics compare Leroy Justice’s music to “workingman’s grub that feeds heart and soul” and predict the group is “destined to become an eminent blues-rooted, tobacco-chewing, spit-on-the-floor rock band.”
The musicians’ “Southern-fried boogie is so faithful,” one writer added, “it’s hard to believe these guys are from the big city and not from some Mountain Dew and Southern Comfort `hollar’.”
While the group hails from Manhattan nowadays, two of its members have roots that are neither urban megalopolis nor a misty, hidden corner of Appalachia.
Vocalist/guitarist Jason Gallagher and drummer Josh Karis both attended Wyoming Valley West High School, and they’re returning to their hometown today to present a free concert at the River Common Amphitheatre.
Karl Borton, director of River Common Programming and Outreach, is beyond enthusiastic.
“I’m 100-percent stoked for Leroy Justice,” Borton said. “It’s a national show at a small, intimate venue. What else could a fan ask for? It’s stellar to think that a national-touring act is playing a free, local show.”
“If you don’t see them now, you’ll have to wait to see them on the national stage and pay $40-$50 a ticket,” he said.
In a brief interview through email, Gallagher said his song-writing is inspired by “Everything from ice-cold beer to girls in sundresses.”
Regarding tonight’s play list, he said, “You’re probably going to hear some new songs like `Domino’ and `Worry Me No More’ alongside earlier tunes like `Revolution’s Son.’ But the guys know when we write a set list, there’s a good chance it’ll fly out the window if the feeling is right.”
As for the big city/rural South comparisons to Lynryd Skynyrd and other Southern-rock musicians, he said, “I don’t think our location ever dictated our sound. But it certainly has toughened us up for any situation. Loading gear, playing a small stage, trying to draw a crowd, they all take on new meaning when you’re doing them in Manhattan.”
